Introduction to Emotion Focused Therapy for Couples (EFTC)
Toni will provide an introduction to the history of EFTC, including a comparison of theories from Greenberg (Canada), Johnson (USA) and Webster (Annandale Institute). The introduction to EFTC takes place in an experiential learning mode, including practice in small groups, and watching/listening to tape from real couples (with written permission from both clients). There will be time throughout the day for group discussion and questions.
Dr Toni Tidswell has had 30 years of clinical work with couples and has taught EFTC in the Grad Dip of Couples & Family Counselling (Relationships Australia), and in the MA of counselling (Monash University). Toni has also completed a Grad Dip of EFT in Sydney that included three modules on couple work.
How to Talk about Sex in Couple Counselling/Therapy
Intimacy and sex are often the first things to disappear when a relationship is going through a rough patch; intimacy and sex are often the last things to return to a healthier relationship. There are a multitude of reasons that sex leaves the relationship early, and some of these will be discussed in the workshop, utilizing many resources and time to practice in small groups to raise issues from client examples in a way that is acceptable for us.
It is our job as the counsellor or therapist to ‘put sex on the table’ as an issue, since our clients mostly will not do this and, if they do, there is sometimes blame and/or shame involved. There are many reasons for this, and some include the difficult aspects of having sex: for example, painful sex; the inability to maintain an erection; one partner reaching orgasm and the other not (or faking it). There will be particular issues in working with any couple, and this includes LGBTQIA couples.

Introduction to Emotion Focused Therapy for individuals (EFT)
Toni provides an introduction to the modalities from which Emotion Focused Therapy has developed, including Humanistic therapy, Person Centered therapy, Gestalt therapy and Focusing. We will explore the beginnings of various interventions such as two chair work and empty chair work and more. The group will learn how to help the client stay with their primary emotions, and to recognize when an emotion is coming from the present or from past events. Toni will use examples of real client tapes (with written permission) to aid the learning experience, provide practice in small groups, and make time for asking questions throughout the day.
